Rania’s journey: telling a story from a first-hand perspective

Rania Mustafa Ali, a 20-year old Syrian woman, filmed her whole journey from the ruins of Kobane to Austria. Crossing the border into Turkey, taking a dangerously overcrowded dinghy to Greece, reaching an already closed FYROM border at Idomeni, and searching for ways to move forward and to reach safety, Rania’s journey is a powerful testimony of the hardships endured by refugees during their journeys.

Being told first-hand and with small and easy-to-carry equipment, her story has a strong potential to contribute to a better understanding of the reasons why people flee their countries. The video, produced by The Guardian, is a great example of providing refugees themselves with the tools to tell their stories and bringing their own voices into the debate.
